The cottage

An 18th-century restored fisherman’s cottage

Midhollies is a traditional cottage – the middle of three – located in the tiny seaside resort of Sea Palling, in North Norfolk. Originally a cottage and bakery, this centuries-old, cosy property is relaxed, well-appointed and dog-friendly. The cottage sleeps 4 adults in two comfortable double rooms, has parking for two cars and lies 50 yards from a public footpath which crosses farmland and dunes to sandy beaches, where dogs can run free throughout the year.

The courtyard is completely enclosed, so your pet will be safe whilst at home. And, it’s south-facing – a bonus during the summertime for faster dry-offs!

Sitting room

Entrance to the cottage is through a stable door which gives on to terracotta-coloured tiled floor with underfloor heating. The main feature of the room is a huge inglenook fireplace with original two-inch brickwork exposed. There are oak beams, wooden furniture, bookshelves, a sofa, and an armchair. A custom-built oak staircase has been ingeniously built to fit a very small space.

Kitchen

The kitchen leads off the sitting room and is fitted with the usual white goods you would expect.

Lobby

There is a small lobby between the kitchen and shower room and it is here that the doggie bits and pieces are kept.

Shower room

With a bit of ingenuity, a very effective semi-circular shower has been fitted in a small room with a loo, wash-hand basin with a lighted mirror above, and tall, heated towel rail. Hot water is plentiful.

Inner bedroom

A wood-framed double bed with pocket sprung mattress, cupboard containing a wooden chest of drawers, hanging space, and a shelf. No room for much else, except an antique Orkney chair and sheepskin rug.

Outer bedroom

Same degree of comfort and quality as the inner bedroom, with wood-framed double bed and single bunk. The view from both bedrooms is inland, through double glazed windows to farmland beyond.

Courtyard

Outside is a large, shingled, south-facing courtyard which is easily managed if you bring pets. It has an outside tap, a tin dog bath, and assorted garden furniture. Beyond the wooden gate, is off-road parking for 2 cars, but please take care not to park in neighbouring space.

  • Lovely cosy cottage in perfect location for beach which is literally a few minutes walk from the front gate across the field. Clean, and everything you need for a few days or longer. Also a good location for visiting other sights in Norfolk and the broads. Best of both worlds with beach so handy. Ali and Julie perfect hosts, extremely helpful.

  • We had a delightful stay at Midthatch. The house is beautiful and so cosy and comfy! We loved the decor in the living room area, the wood burner and the useful things like plenty of coat hooks and an ironing board. The location peaceful, and perfect for a relaxing break. Would love to come back again, perhaps in the Spring/Summer to make use of the lovely garden.

  • Stunning place! Absolutely perfectly located to access the amazing beach … easy driving distance from Horsey Gap beach to see the seals and to any of the nearby boat hire places for a trip along the broads. Very good farm shop nearby stocks fresh produce. Very well equipped stocked cottage… all the necessities for cooking, entertainment and comfortable living.

  • Great little house with an amazing beach nearby, perfect for walks with the dogs. I’m roughly an hour and a half away and I’ve visited Norfolk beaches all my life, I can safely say, even in the rain this one is my favourite. Thanks for hosting us, the pooches had an amazing time!

  • Great little place to stay! Beautiful sandy beaches are walking distance. Our dog was exhausted! Saw 100’s of seals on Horsey beach! Had a brilliant meal at The Ingham Swan as recommended by the owner. All round great break away…Enjoy!

  • This was our fourth stay at Ali’s cottage and it won’t be the last. The perfect balance of a cosy cottage, a great location and fully approved and loved by our dog. Thanks to the pandemic it had been over a year since our last visit, but his tail wagging excitement as he realised where we were was palpable. This is our favourite cottage and we love staying here.
